ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Sunday received a delegation from the Qatari foreign ministry who are in the Kurdish capital of Erbil to inaugurate their consulate.

The Qatari delegation consisted of the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry Ahmed bin Hassan al-Hamadi, as well the Qatari ambassador to Iraq and the consul general in Erbil.

“Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening Qatar's relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. They also discussed opportunities and areas for Qatari investment in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, exchanging views on these matters,” read a statement from the Kurdistan Region presidency.

The Qataris “reiterated their country's confidence in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and expressed their desire to further develop economic and commercial ties,” according to the presidency’s statement.

“They also expressed readiness to invest and collaborate in various sectors, including energy, tourism, agriculture, education, and health,” it added.

The Qatari consulate in Erbil will be officially inaugurated on Sunday.

Qatar reopened its Baghdad embassy in 2015 after shutting it during the 1990s Gulf War when several regional and world powers suspended diplomatic relations over Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Doha opened its Erbil consulate last summer.

The Qatari government has discussed a free trade agreement with Baghdad as their ties strengthen.
