ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Kurdistan on the Iran-Iraq border early Sunday morning, injuring hundreds and killing two people.
At least 241 people were injured the head of the Emergency Department at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences told state-run IRNA news.
Two people died in Iran the emergency center reported West Isalamabad and Salasi Bawajan. The deceased included a pregnant woman and 70-year-old man who suffered a heart attack.
The epicenter was near the Iranian Kurdistan's (Rojhelat) town of Gezen in Kermanshah province just across the border from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq's Halabaja province.
Tremors were felt from as far away as Erbil and Baghdad.
The Iraqi Meteorological Seismology Organization confirmed the earthquake in a statement.
People on the borders with Kurdistan, Diyala felt the effects strongly, while in Iraq and some areas in Baghdad the impact was felt "clearly". No human loses have been reported in Iraq.
On November 12, 2017, a massive 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck areas around the Iraq-Iran border, leaving 620 people dead and another 12,000 injured on the Iranian side alone. The city of Sarpol-e Zahab in Kermanshah suffered the highest numbers of casualties with many houses destroyed.
