Erbil celebrates Prophet Mohammed's birthday

A large number of Erbil residents poured into the streets on Thursday to commemorate Prophet Mohammed's birthday, or al-Mawlid al-Nabawi al-Sharif.

Celebrating the birth of the prophet around the citadel has become a tradition among Erbil locals, with shops distributing drinks and sweets free of charge and the citadel with the name Mohammed, and flags bearing his name and Islamic symbols.

This year's celebrations saw fewer crowds compared to the previous years due to fear of coronavirus, which is widespread across the Kurdistan Region.
