In some areas of Kurdistan where people grow wheat and barley on mountainsides and combine harvesters can't reach, farmers use sickles and scythe for harvesting. In Kurdish a sickle is called das and scythe is karantu.

Often relatives and neighbors join the effort and help out with the hard task. The favor is returned to the relatives the next harvesting season.

Such small scale farming in the mountains is often for home consumption. They make flour from the wheat or borghul which in Kurdish is called sawar and other wheat-related recipes. Wheat in Kurdish is ganim and barley is jo.
