ERBIL, Kurdistan Region -- Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani’s office and Prime Minister Masour Barzani condemned the killing of seven members of a Kurdish family in Turkey’s central Konya province. They called for the perpetrators to be held accountable.

The Dedeoglu family, who had been injured on May 12 in an attack by nationalist Turks who were their neighbors, were attacked again on Friday and murdered. Their killers are still at large.

“We condemn the attack against a Kurdish family in Turkey and our thoughts and prayers are with victims’ family and loved ones. Those responsible for this senseless crime must be brought to justice,” read a tweet from President Barzani’s office late Friday.

PM Barzani said early Saturday that he is “deeply saddened” by the “vicious” attack, conveying the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) condolences. He said he expects “the perpetrators to be held fully accountable.”

The attack has been widely condemned by Kurdish and Turkish politicians in Turkey, but officials have warned against classifying the incident as “racist” after the family’s lawyer and scores of social media did so.

There have been several recent attacks on Kurds in Turkey.

A Kurdish family was attacked by a group of some 60 people on July 21 in the same province. One person was killed.

A Kurdish family from Erbil - who were on vacation in Turkey - was attacked in Mersin province. It was also widely labeled a “racist” attack. Three people were arrested.
