ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A man convicted of killing his female colleague at their workplace in the Kurdish capital last year was handed a death sentence on Sunday, according to a statement.
Shadia Abdullah, an employee in Erbil’s Ministry of Electricity, was shot dead by her colleague on March 29 of last year.
The perpetrator, who was in the custody of security forces, was given the death penalty, in accordance to Article 406 of the Iraqi penal code, the electricity ministry quoted a source from the law directorate as saying, without disclosing names and details.
Erbil’s police described Abdullah’s murder as a result of a “social problem,” at the time. The term is a popular euphemism for interpersonal or intercommunity conflicts, including those surrounding premarital romantic or sexual relations.
Her uncle, who preferred to stay anonymous, told Rudaw at the time that the suspect had proposed to Abdullah almost two years ago now, but she had refused his proposal and got engaged to someone else instead.
Article 406 of Iraq’s penal code says “any person who willfully kills another is punishable by death” under a few circumstances, including if the killing is premeditated.
Abdullah was shot in the head and chest, according to witnesses from the scene.
