Kuwait’s Amir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah sent cables to US President Donald Trump and the family of George HW Bush, expressing his condolences on the passing of the former president, the country’s state media (KUNA) reported.

Bush passed away Friday night, aged 94.

The Amir recalled the former president’s historic stand in support of Kuwait during the Iraqi occupation and his leadership in the liberation of Kuwait.

Bush built up an international military coalition to push Iraq out of Kuwait after Saddam Hussein invaded the southern neighbour in August 1990. He opted not to continue an offensive into Iraq to topple Hussein’s dictatorship - a decision he later described as a miscalculation.

His son, George W Bush, led a second war to oust Hussein in 2003.
