ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Mustafa Badreddine, the Hezbollah militia's top military commander was killed in an explosion in Syria, the group confirmed on Friday.

The Lebanon-based Shiite militia group released a statement on its television network confirming his death in an explosion in the Syrian capital Damascus.

"He took part in most of the operations of the Islamic resistance since 1982," read the Hezbollah leader adding that he was "the great jihadi leader."

Hezbollah also said it is investigating whether or not the large explosion on its base near Damascus's airport was a targeted Israeli airstrike.

Badreddine was believed to be the most powerful man in Hezbollah, second only to the leader, Hassan Nasrallah. The US Treasury Department believes he led Hezbollah's military intervention in Syria.

Badreddine was the group’s top commander for the last eight years.
