ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - France’s President will attend the second edition of the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership scheduled for December 20 in the Jordanian capital.

“I will go next week to Amman for the Baghdad conference number two,” French President Emmanuel Macron said in response to a question from Rudaw’s reporter on the sidelines of the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.

Macron emphasized Paris’ support for the Kurdish people in Iran and elsewhere, adding that their security will be a core topic of his meeting with leaders of the MENA region next week.

Jordan will be hosting the second round of the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership on December 20, where so far, Iraq, Egypt, and France have officially announced their attendance.

While announcing the date of the conference last week, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein extended an invitation to both Turkey and Iran as well.

“Turkey and Iran participated in the first conference in Baghdad, and we expect them to participate in the next conference as well,” he said, adding that the conference aims at resolving problems including the “many interventions” in Iraq.

The first Baghdad Conference was held in August last year in cooperation with Paris, and along Macron, leaders of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates were invited.

Iraq, Egypt, and Jordan share strong ties. Last year, a tripartite meeting was held by the countries in Baghdad, during which they discussed cooperation in the fields of security, military, and intelligence.

After the meeting, the three countries said they would strengthen cooperation in the gas and electricity sector, with Iraqi oil to be exported to Egypt and Jordan through the Arab Gas Line and a crude oil line linking Basra to the Jordanian city of Aqaba.

The three countries agreed on closer economic cooperation in March 2019, when a first summit was held in Cairo.
