ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack spoke on the phone on Tuesday. The American official thanked Barzani for his positive role in Syria.

“During the call, both sides discussed the situation in Syria and the latest developments in the region. In this regard, they agreed that problems in the region should be resolved through dialogue and understanding, “said the Kurdistan Region Presidency in a statement.

Barrack reiterated his appreciation for the role of President Barzani and “his cooperation and assistance in resolving Kurdish issues in Syria with Damascus and also requested the continuation of his positive role.” it added.

President Barzani has repeatedly called on Syrian Kurds to go to Damascus and resolve their issues through dialogue.

He told a forum in Erbil earlier this month that a central system of governance does not work in Syria.

“This is a point of disagreement [between us and Syria]. I have talked about this with [Syrian] President Ahmed al-Sharaa,” he said, adding that centralism does not work in a country where various ethnic and religious groups like Kurds, Druze and Alawites live.

President Barzani also said that despite the concerns about the governance of the country, the new leaders in Damascus have to be given a chance to rebuild the country, adding that Syrians deserve a better life.
