Jordanian authorities said Sunday that their border guards shot dead 12 people, some of them armed as they tried to infiltrate the country from Syria.
The authorities believe the infiltrators were drug smugglers as they carried with them about two million drug capsules, BBC reported.
The shooting that took place on Saturday was considered one of the worst incident along the Syria-Jordan border in recent years.
Jordan maintains strict border control with Syria especially since the start of the civil war Syria in 2011.
The army and border and border guards have exchanged fire with rebels and on one occasion with the Syrian military near border.
The small kingdom hosts more than 600,000 Syrian refugees who have crossed its northern border with Syria.
