A British woman who recently returned to the United Kingdom from Syria has been found guilty of membership in the Islamic State (ISIS).

Tareena Shakil, 26, of Birmingham who took her toddler with her in 2014 and joined ISIS has also been with “encouraging acts of terrorism through messages posted on Twitter. She denied the charges.” BBC reported.

During her trial in Birmingham Shakil told the court that she moved to Syria because she wanted to live under the Sharia law, but her claim was rejected by the jury.

“The jury was shown her tweets, messages and photographs, including images of the black flag of IS and passages calling on people to "take up arms",” wrote the BBC. “She had also stated her wish to become a "martyr".”

During her time in Syria Shakil posted photos of herself and son in ISIS outfit and the group’s black flag.

Shakil’s defense team told the court that she went to Syria to escape an unhappy life, as Shakil said that she had been debriefed by MI5 upon her return.

A number of British citizens have joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq where they have declared jihad on Britain for the Royal Air Force’s air strikes against the group in both countries.
