ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps announced Tuesday that it has tested several ballistic missiles across the country, despite recent US threats of sanction against such tests.
The tests were “to show Iran's deterrent power and also the Islamic Republic's ability to confront any threat against the (Islamic) Revolution, the state and the sovereignty of the country,” said IRGC official website.
The missile test comes two months after the United States imposed fresh economic sanction on Iranian companies connected to the country’s missile program.
Iran’s missile tests are in violation of a United Nations ban on testing nuclear-capable ballistic missiles.
Tehran says it hasn't violated the terms of the nuclear deal it signed with the P5+1 powers in Vienna last July, arguing that the deal technically bans the testing of missiles "designed" to be fitted with nuclear warheads, not missiles.
