ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A small private passenger jet heading from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Istanbul has crashed in southwestern Iran killing 11 people, according to Iranian state television.
Citing an aviation official, Tasnim news agency said the plane crashed near the city of Shahr-e Kord in the southwestern province of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari.
The Iranian Red Crescent told the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) that all 11 people, including eight passengers and three crew, were killed.
It is believed the plane, owned by the private holding company of Turkish businessman Huseyin Basaran, was returning from a bachelorette party in Dubai. Basaran’s daughter Mina and seven of her friends were reportedly on board.
Mojtaba Khaledi, the spokesman of the country’s emergency management organization, told the state media channel the plane hit a mountain and burst into flames.
An Iranian ATR-72 crashed in Iran’s mountainous south in late February, killing all 65 people on board.
