ERBIL, Kurdistan Region  - An Iranian official claimed on Sunday that the country's security forces found and neutralized a "terrorist cell" in the small Kurdish border-town of Sumar in the country's western Kermanshah province.

"A terrorist cell crossed the border in the western district of Sumar this [Sunday] morning ... and fortunately they were trapped with the vigilance of military and security forces," Iran's Deputy Interior Minister for Security Affairs Hossein Zolfaqari told reporters according to the Iranian Tasnim News Agency.

"There were two agents who were exterminated and their arms were seized," Zolfaqari said, "We are working on identifying them."

He also said that the group had entered Iran with the intention of carrying out terrorist attacks.

"It will be determined what was their target, but there is no doubt that they had a terrorist intention," he said.

He did not speculate whether Islamic State (ISIS) had any role saying that was a question for the Ministry of Intelligence to investigate.

The two operations he alluded to reportedly took place on February 8 and February 24. The former date was an arrest of one individual in the southeastern border area while the latter date saw a four-men cell busted.

Six suicide vests and nine electronic fuses were among the items reportedly taken from the groups possession.
