ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The president of Nineveh Provincial Council was awarded the Luxembourg Peace Prize for his efforts to achieve peace among the diverse population of Nineveh.

The Luxembourg Peace Prize is awarded by the Schengen Peace Foundation to honour “outstanding” contributions to the “field of peace.”

On receiving the honour, Bashar Kiki, a Kurd, told Rudaw, “This prize is for our attempts and efforts for public peace among the different ethnic groups in Nineveh. Receiving this prize is an honor for my nation. It means that Kurds are one of the nations who always like peace and coexistence.”

Kiki was the first Kurd from the Kurdistan Region and first Iraqi to receive the prize, he confirmed.

The peace prize is given in seven categories including technology, youth, and education. Kiki won in the category Outstanding Public Peace Efforts.

He has dedicated the prize to the Peshmerga, "because they are fighting against ISIS, a force opposed to peace and coexistence.”
