Shiite pilgrims mark the birth of Imam al-Mahdi in Karbala
Pilgrims visited Imam al-Mahdi shrine in Karbala, Iraq this week to commemorate the birth of the Imam – the holiest figure for Shiite Muslims.
Imam al-Mahdi, the 12th Imam, is revered by Shiites as the coming Messiah.
His birth is marked two weeks before the start of Ramadan.
