MOSUL, Iraq – Black smoke hangs over war-torn Mosul in drone footage filmed by The Associated Press.
Iraqi forces have taken control of al-Jamhouri hospital, the coalition announced on Monday, publishing a video of the Iraqi flag flying from the roof of the building.
Col. Ryan Dillon, coalition spokesperson, on Twitter called the event “Significant – ISIS used this hospital to gun down and murder 100s of civilians trying to flee.”
Iraqi commanders had said they took control of the hospital on Thursday, the same day Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared the end of ISIS after forces liberated the symbolic al-Nuri mosque and al-Hadba minaret where ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi announced his so-called caliphate.
