ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Thirteen people were killed in a horrific traffic accident on the Baghdad-Diyala road on Tuesday, a local source confirmed to Rudaw.
"The accident occured on Tuesday morning on the Diyala-Baghdad road," said a local military source in Diyala province.
In a statement, Diyala Police Department announced 13 people were killed in the fatal accident, including elderly people and several children.
The accident involved a Kia Cadenza and Hyundai Accent, in which the latter had carried nine passengers.
The source said the Cadenza driver who was responsible for the accident, also died in the horrific incident.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Car accidents are a common occurrence in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, where years of war, neglect, and corruption have affected its infrastructure. Roads are often riddled with potholes and lack proper illumination, making it difficult to see when driving at night.
At least 40 people were injured and several were killed in a devastating traffic accident last month in Iraq’s southern Basra province during the million-person Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings.
