ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraqi forces have reached the eastern bank of the Tigris River.
Forces of the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (ICTS) "took control of the eastern side of the 4th bridge over the Tigris River on the eastern bank," Iraq's war media cell of the Joint Operations Command said in a statement published Sunday evening.
On Saturday, the Iraqi army announced that they had taken control of the intersection leading to the bridge.
Further north in the city, Iraqi forces are approaching the Nineveh ruins.
"This morning CTS troops advanced in two directions towards the Baladiyat and Sukkar districts," Lt.General Abdelwahab al-Saadi told Reuters.
"During the advance, Daesh tried to confront us from the historic hill," he detailed, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS. He said that the Iraqi forces backed by coalition air power fought back, killing dozens of militants.
