A young boy fleeing west Mosul said it has been two days since he ate. “They devastated us,” he said about ISIS. “There is nothing, not even Nestle,” he added, wishing for a popular chocolate brand.
He and his family are going to join relatives in east Mosul.
About a three quarter of a million civilians are estimated to have been trapped in the western half, UN says, and half of whom are thought to be children, according to the charity organization Save the Children.
More than 57,000 people had fled western Mosul as of Sunday since the start of the third and current phase of the offensive began three weeks ago, Iraq’s minister for migration and displaced Darbaz Mohammad said, adding that since the beginning of the Mosul offensive the number of the displaced has passed a quarter of a million.
