ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Nineveh's police chief announced on Sunday that local tribesmen from the Sunni Baaj district killed the local wali, or governor, and a "companion."

"The tribesmen and people of Baaj district killed the wali of ISIS in Baaj area, Ahmed Farhan Hamdan al-Ubaydi, aka Abu Aysha al-Turkmani and one of his ISIS companions Luay Ahmed Shati," stated the statement by Brigadier General Hamad al-Jabouri, published on the Facebook account of the police.

The statement said the wali was a Turkmen.

He was a "renowned and dangerous leader of ISIS ... killing innocent people."

Baaj, located near the Iraq-Syria border, was a key hub for ISIS that connected Mosul to Raqqa.

The city fell to ISIS in 2014 but was later liberated by Iraqi forces on June 2017 as part the 'We Are Coming, Nineveh' operation.

Mosul operations were conducted by various Iraqi military and police units, the Peshmerga, and Hashd al-Shaabi. The US-led international anti-ISIS coalition supported the two former in the campaign.

On the border area, the coalition is continuing to support the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Iraqi Army to clear ISIS remnants. Additionally, last week the coalition provided air support to Peshmerga who killled an ISIS finance chief near Makhmour, a disputed city, that serves as a vital link between Mosul and Kirkuk.
