ERBIL, Kurdistan - A military operation to recapture the ISIS-held town of Fallujah in Anbar province will begin next week, an Iraqi local official announced Thursday.

"Military preparations for the Fallujah military operations have ended and [the offensive] will kick off next week," Hamid Ahmed, a member of the Anbar Provincial Council, told Rudaw.

Ahmed suggested that the Fallujah military operation will not take a long time.

He added that along with the Iraqi forces taking part in the operation, around 300 volunteers have joined military units and are now undergoing military training.

"Some 300 volunteers from Fallujah have been receiving military training at the Habbaniyah and Amiriyah military bases and are being prepared for the military operation," Ahmed confirmed.

Fallujah, which is home to some 50,000 people, was the first Iraqi city to fall to ISIS in early 2014. It has been surrounded and besieged by the Iraqi Army since being taken by ISIS and conditions are worsening as supplies in the city dwindle.
