One Turkish soldier was killed and another wounded in an attack on Turkey's Bashiqa forward-operating-base in Northern Iraq's Nineveh province on Saturday. Hours later Turkey retaliated with artillery fire and airstrikes.

"Due to projectiles that fell on the base, our hero fellow soldier has been martyred and one hero fellow soldiers was slightly injured," read a statement by the Turkish General Staff quoted by the Turkish Anadolu state news agency.

The camp was hit by Katyusha projectile fire as Iraqi Army soldiers Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers fought Islamic State (ISIS) militants in an offensive in Makhmour. The attack killed First Lieutenant Ismail Cazgir, the other wounded soldier was airlifted home to Sirnak State Hospital in Turkey.

"Islamic State targets identified in the region have been shot back at," the General Staff statement added. "Four Islamic State targets have been bombarded by warplanes from the coalition forces. An additional four targets have been fired at intensely by Turkish warplanes and have been destroyed."

These actions, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu contended, showed Turkey's "resolution, strong will and power against attacks targeting its military presence abroad."

Bashiqa has been hit by ISIS rocket fire in the past which wounded Turkish soldiers. The base is home to Turkish troops and advisors who are training Peshmerga forces and Sunni militiamen who will participate in the liberation of Mosul from ISIS.
