ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A barrage of Israeli missiles targeted the vicinity of Aleppo late Monday, killing at least one Syrian army soldier, and putting the Aleppo airport out of service, reported Syrian state media (SANA).
The strikes, carried out at around 11:35PM, targeted the Aleppo International airport and a number of military sites in the vicinity of the city, according to SANA. An additional five Syrian army soldiers, as well as two civilians were injured in the attack.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), said that the missiles targeted the area of Aleppo International Airport and Nayrab military airfield, leading to a fire at a munitions depot and causing great material damage.
The attack marks the second Israeli missile strike in Syria within the last week. An ammunition warehouse belonging to Lebanon’s Hezbollah group in Homs was struck by Israeli missiles on Saturday, resulting in the injury of at least four Syrian army soldiers.
Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on regime-controlled areas of Syria throughout its 12-year civil war, often claiming to target pro-Iran militias, such as Lebanon's Hezbollah group, which supports the Syrian army. However, it very rarely claims responsibility for attacks on Syria.
Iran and Israel have been engaged in a shadow war consisting of long-running covert attacks on Iranian military and nuclear facilities, as well as sabotage and cyber-attacks. Iranian fighters are also frequently targeted in suspected Israeli strikes in Syria.
