ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Syrian forces what liberated the ancient city of Palmyra from the Islamic State (ISIS) late last month, captured more territory from the militants on Monday, recapturing the eastern portion of al-Qaryatayn, a city west of Palmyra.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that the new territories were captured by the Syrian army, militiamen loyal to the force and backed by Russian airstrikes.

“The ‘Islamic state’ retreated from the east of al-Qaryatayn city in the southeast of Homs province completely,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Monday.

The group reported that clashes are ongoing as sounds of fire and gunshot are still heard by people in the eastern side of the city.

According to the group, the regime forces avoid entering the city in the fear of mines and explosives planted by the militants.

On Sunday, at least 10 people were executed publicly at the hands of the terrorist group in Raqqa on charge of “corrupting on earth,” SOHR said.

“The organization executed about 10 people in the countryside of Al-Raqqah, they were killed and crucified, and that was on charges of “corrupting on earth, and looting of Muslim’s money and forming a gang that impersonated al-Hisba members,” according to the Observatory.

On March 27, Syrian government forces, backed by Russian air sorties that killed more than 100 ISIS militants, recaptured the ancient city of Palmyra.
