ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The vice chair of Council for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) called for the political recognition of northeast Syria while addressing the question of the Turkish invasion of the region on Thursday.
“To permanently defeat ISIS and other terrorist groups, you need governance, security, and an ideology to counter IS’s ideology, the autonomous administration of North-East Syria has done all of these things,” said Nadine Maenza the vice chair of USCIRF in a press conference released by North Press Agency on Thursday.
“The only way to defeat ISIS in Syria is to give political recognition to the autonomous administration of North-East Syria,” she added. “Turkey’s narrative that the citizens of North-East Syria are terrorists to justify their invasion is ridiculous,” she added. “This government stands for religious freedom, gender equality, and even gardens.”
Maenza encouraged the international community to condemn Turkey’s activities in the region. “There are so many reasons the international community should be speaking up about the horrible atrocities happening against religious minorities in the areas that Turkey is occupying in Syria,” she said.
“It is time for the US government to consider sanctions because certainly president Erdogan has disregarded president Trump’s instruction,” she added.
“He has done exactly what he said he would not, gone in committed atrocities, killing people….the administration should consider pretty tough sanctions.”
Hannah Neumann, a member of the European Parliament, also visited the AANES Department of Foreign Relations in the city of Qamishli on Thursday to discuss current conditions in the region.
During her meeting, she sought to “see the situation in the region after the recent Turkish invasion and the conditions of the Hawl and Roj Camps, where the families of ISIS militants are located,” according to a video published by North Press Agency.
“As members of the European Parliament, we cannot make decisions for others to implement, but we need to continue to talk about Turkish violations to make sure the issue is not forgotten,” she added. Turkey has carried out three military operations against Kurdish fighters in Syria since 2016. Syrian Kurds commemorated the first anniversary of the latest one, Operation Peace Spring, on Friday.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the start of a long-threatened military offensive against Kurdish forces in northeast Syria, nicknamed Operation Peace Spring, in October of 2019.
“Our mission is to prevent the creation of a terror corridor across our southern border, and to bring peace to the area,” the Turkish President tweeted on October 9, 2019 .
