ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Suspected Turkish artillery shells on Monday targeted several villages in northern Hasaka in northeast Syria (Rojava), severely damaging civilian houses, as reported by a local media outlet.

Alleged Turkish artillery hit at least three villages in al-Darbasiyah sub-district in Hasaka, Hawar News Agency (ANHA) said. There are no reports of casualties.

Hasaka has previously been targeted by Turkey as it often launches attacks in the region, killing and injuring civilians and security forces.

Rojava saw 47 Turkish ground attacks and incursion attempts, as well as 89 drone offensives, over the past year, killing and injuring hundreds, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said in its annual report in January.

The recent offensive in Hasaka comes days after Ankara launched a new operation, dubbed Winter Eagle, in the border areas of Syria and north of Iraq.

Suspected Turkish drones also targeted a vehicle transporting three members of the Kurdish Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) on Thursday, killing one person.

At least one person was injured in Hasaka’s Zirgan district in another suspected Turkish attack last month.

Turkey has conducted three military operations in northern Syria since 2016, two of them against Kurdish fighters who Ankara considers a branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and a threat to its national security. It has previously threatened to launch a new offensive in Rojava.
