ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A northeast Syria (Rojava) umbrella group on Wednesday said American officials have said they will work for the resumption of stalled unity talks between them and ruling parties.
US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Joey Hood and other American officials working on the Syrian dossier held a virtual meeting with leadership of the Kurdish National Council (ENKS) on Tuesday, the party said in a statement.
The Americans reaffirmed their “support for talks between the Kurdish National Council and the Kurdish National Unity Parties [PYNK], working on resolving the obstacles before them,” read the statement.
The US Department of State has not reported on the meeting.
PYNK, an umbrella group of 24 parties led by the ruling Democratic Union Party (PYD), have been in talks with ENKS since late 2019 to reach an agreement over power sharing and unification of the Kurdish position in Rojava. The talks have been stalled since summer 2020 and officials from both sides have been waging a war of words through the media.
ENKS added in its statement that their officials are ready to work out their problems with their rivals and acknowledged “the importance and necessity of bringing about the unity of Kurds.”
Mohammed Ismail is the head of ENKS negotiation committee. He told Rudaw’s Dilbixwin Dara late Wednesday that their meeting with the Americans was “very important.” The US ambassador to Syria will continue discussions with both sides in order to bring them back to the negotiating table, he added.
The Americans also reassure the Kurds about their commitment in Syria. “They reaffirmed that the US is committed to remaining in Syria both diplomatically and militarily,” said Ismail.
ENKS offices in Rojava have come under attack scores of times in recent years, most recently this week in Dirbesiye. ENKS blames the PYD for the attacks that have caused material damage.
The opposition group said in its statement that the Americans told them they will work on “stopping violations against the ENKS.”
ENKS’ position is that the pressure on them should be lifted before the talks resume “because we do not want talks for the sake of talks… We need an agreement that is in the interest of our people,” said Ismail.
