Four Iranian Army soldiers were killed in Syria a mere week after Tehran said it was deploying an elite brigade of the regular army to that war-torn country.
"Four of the first military advisors of the Islamic Republic's army...were killed in Syria by takfiri [Sunni Islamist] groups," reported Iran's Tasnim news agency.
The elite special forces Brigade 65 of the Iranian Army was sent in, according to the authorities in Tehran, to advise the Syrians, not to participate in active combat. The deployment of such a brigade is noteworthy since Iran had in the past deployed paramilitary Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) forces. Hundreds of whom have been killed in recent months.
Iran is the primary supporter and patron of the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
