ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Russia plans to establish a field hospital in the Syrian city of Palmyra so they can provide rapid medical assistance to Russians in that area said Russia's Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu on Tuesday.
"It will have modern medical equipment and be capable of working autonomously during 30 days," Russia's Tass news quoted him saying. "If necessary, both Syrian military servicemen and the local population that have begun to return to Palmyra will be able to apply here [at the hospital]."
Russia supported, with air power and special forces, a Syrian military offensive which forced Islamic State (ISIS) from Palmyra last March 27.
The establishment of a field hospital in Palmyra would assist Russian and Syrian efforts to fight continue their war against ISIS further east while using Palmyra as a staging ground. The Iraqi Army on the Makhmour Front has also said it needs a field hospital to support operations against ISIS on that front.
