BERLIN, Germany — The UN's special envoy for Syria says he has accepted an invitation from the government to travel to Damascus for talks with officials there.

The office of Staffan de Mistura said Sunday that he wanted to give the Syrian government the opportunity to express their views about the ongoing negotiations between different factions in the conflict.

The talks began in early May and will continue into July.

His office said de Mistura intended to address the Syrian's government's duty to spare civilians from harm, and stop the use of so-called barrel bombs that are thrown from helicopters into crowded neighborhoods.

He also planned to discuss ways to increase access for humanitarian aid in Syria.
