ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Syrian army has reportedly gained control over a number of villages and oilfields south of Raqqa and in western Deir ez-Zur, two ISIS holdouts in the eastern part of the country.

State run SANA News Agency, citing army officials, reported a large number of ISIS militants were killed during operations.

A number of oil fields were also retaken during the military operations, according to the military source.

The Syrian army's movements in the region come while Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are spearheading a major offensive to drive ISIS out of the city of Raqqa.

The SDF, a coalition of Kurds and Arabs, launched a military operation on Raqqa earlier this year and has entered some districts in the center of the city, backed by the US-led global coalition.

US special forces are on the ground in Raqqa, much closer to front line combat than they have been in Iraq. Coalition spokesperson US Army Col. Ryan Dillon told reporters that American soldiers are “putting themselves where they need to be” in order to assist the allied SDF.
