Syria's Kurds celebrated on Friday after the Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) wrested the key town of Shadadi from Islamic State (ISIS) control. Shadadi is the last town in Hasakah Province the group controlled.
"Massive congratulations on this great achievement by our heroes," said the SDF spokesman Colonel Talal Silo according to Middle East Eye. "This victory is dedicated to our martyrs and wounded fighters, who sacrificed their blood so we can celebrate victory, liberation, security and safety."
ISIS had previously used the town to train for and prepare for bomb attacks they launched against Qamishlo and Tel Tamr last year.
The United States gave supporting airstrikes to this three-day long SDF operation. Shadadi sits on an important supply route which runs between Mosul and Raqqa, ISIS' most significant strongholds in Iraq and Syria.
It was also used as a slave market by ISIS in Syria for the selling of Yazidi sex-slaves kidnapped from Shingal.
