ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Amid continued airstrikes, the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS dropped leaflets which include caricatures of ISIS leaders in southern Hasaka province, according to a conflict monitor.
The airdrops mostly targeted ISIS-controlled al-Shafa, Haijin, and al-Bukhtair, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights on Friday.
The conflict monitor added that strikes over the past 24 hours killed seven civilians and 14 ISIS members in the areas east of the Euphrates just kilometers away from the Iraqi border.
Syrian Democratic Forces liberated Dashisha earlier this week and have worked to clear villages between it and the Iraqi border.
“We liberated the Dashisha town on the 14th day of the campaign. We are in al-Zibah village at the moment and we are clearing it of mines and ruins of war to ensure the return of local people," SDF member Orkes Ciya was quoted as saying by media close to the YPG, ANHA.
The closest major Iraqi city is al-Baaj in Nineveh province. Through the ISIS conflict, the extremists used such areas to travel between Raqqa and Mosul.
The coalition tweeted that "approximately 300 square-kilometers" have been liberated around Dashisha as part of Operation Roundup.
BBC reported ISIS claimed its first attack on Friday in Raqqa since losing the province in October 2017.
