BRUSSELS, Belgium — Until an agreement is reached between "East and West," a solution is unlikely for the Syrian conflict that is also affecting Europe directly because of migration.
"I'm coming from central Europe, so I know very well that whenever there are big conflicts the world there must be an agreement between East and West," Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said.
"We are interested in a peaceful resolution in Syria as soon as possible because we see the developments in Syria as the most significant of the root causes of the migration crisis in Europe, but we are realistic," said Szijjarto.
Hungary is a major land route for human traffickers who attempt smuggle migrants from Syria and elsewhere into western European countries.
The Council of Europe said on Friday that Hungary's ability to detect human trafficking of asylum-seekers has deteriorated.
Western countries have backed the UN's Geneva process, while Russia, Iran, and Turkey established the Astana talks in 2017. Both have failed to find a solution for the Syrian people.
"This has been our position for a long time. Without an agreement between Russia and the United States there's limited hope for a resolution. We are crossing our fingers," said Szijjarto.
Half of all Syrians have at one time or another been displaced because of the conflict that began in 2011. More than 350,000 Syrians have been killed, according to the UN.
"So I really do hope that Russia and the United States once upon a time will have an agreement ... on how to go forward in Syria," added Szijjarto.
