KOBANE BORDER—Kurdish forces in Kobane retook control of the city’s municipality building after several hours of intense fighting with militants of the Islamic State (ISIS), said a commander.
“Violent clashes broke out Friday morning on the Mishta Nur Heights, which resulted in the advance of the Kurdish fighters and controlling the municipality building in the city of Kobane,” Mohammad Mullah Omar, the commander of the Peshmerga forces in Kobane told Rudaw.
Omar said that the Peshmerga and the Peoples Protection Units (YPG) launched a coordinated attack on the Islamic militants to recapture what he called a strategic part of the city.
“Controlling it [the higher ground] will have positive implications for the conduct of military operations in the future,” he said, referring to the fight for an area in the outskirts of the city.
The YPG media center described the retaking of the municipality building as a victory over ISIS on the 102nd day of fighting in Kobane.
“The process of securing the municipality building in the neighborhood south of 48th Street was successful and 21 of the extremists were killed in that operation,” said the YPG in a statement.
The statement said that the Kurdish forces seized a number of weapons from the retreating ISIS, including 16 assault rifles, two machineguns, five B7 rocket launchers and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
