ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Three soldiers of the Syrian regime have deserted and fled to Turkey, the Turkish news agency Andolu reported on Wednesday.

“Three Syrian regime soldiers fled the country and reached Turkey's southern frontier province of Hatay late on Tuesday,” it quoted a security source as saying.

The source, who was not identified, said the three men described themselves as "Assad's soldiers." It said they were being questioned by Turkish security.

Turkey, Syria’s northern neighbor, remains opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, insisting he must step down.

Turkish, which backs the Free Syrian Army, sent in forces to Syria last August to strike at ISIS and Syrian Kurdish forces that Ankara opposes.
