Residents trickling back to Turkey’s Gavar find destroyed district

This is Colemerg district in Gavar, destroyed during the 78-day-curfew carried out by the Turkish army.

People survey their homes with fear and hope the situation of their city will become normal once again.

Gavar is trying to overcome the destruction, without giving up.

Some 5,000 houses, nine schools and tens of mosques have been destroyed in Gavar.

Neighborhoods like Jomhoriyat either have been destroyed completely or torched.

Water is the main thing that people need in the district.

Gavar municipality is trying to provide water to the residents with water tankers.

There are still some neighborhoods In Gavar with no water and homes that are not destroyed.

Gavar residents who have fled to Van and other areas are returning to the city.

Police checkpoints make it harder to return.
