ANKARA, Turkey - Two people were killed and as many wounded in clashes in Turkey’s Kurdish Diyarbakir province on Monday, as police cracked down on a march to protest an ongoing curfew, local media reports said.
“Two people were killed and another two were wounded on Dec. 14 during clashes between security forces and protesters in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir that erupted after police refused to permit a march to protest an ongoing curfew,” the Hurriyet Daily News reported on its website.
“Police forces are continuing to determine the identities of the two who were killed in the Kaynartepe neighborhood of Baglar district,” the website said, citing local media reports.
Those reports said the two dead were aged 18 and 20, and the injured were youngsters.
The march was announced by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) to protest a continuing curfew in Sur district. But the Diyarbakir governor’s office called the march unlawful and urged people to ignore the call to protest.
“In response, police forces dispersed some groups who attempted to block roads with barricades ahead of the march by firing into the air, using tear gas and pressurized water,” Hurriyet reported.
