Camel wrestling is an ancient tradition in Turkey.
It has its roots in the culture of nomadic tribes who relied on camels for their livelihoods. Two male camels wrestle to attract the attention of a female. A camel wins by making its opponent retreat, scream, or fall. The owner can also choose to forfeit if he or she is worried about the animal.
Today, festivals are held in the winter months along the Aegean region of Turkey. The festival in Selcuk dates back 2400 years.
