ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, says he is well after a health condition forced him to be carried off on a stretcher after attending early morning Eid al-Fitr prayers in Istanbul.

“Thank God, I’m well now,” the Turkish Hurriyet Daily News quoted Erdogan as saying after he reportedly collapsed on Sunday just before the start of prayers at Mimar Sinan Mosque in Istanbul.

A Hurriyet reporter, who was covering the event said Erdogan arrived at 5:20 a.m., said “The fact that he started leaning toward the left while sitting at around 6 a.m. drew attention from those around him. Bodyguards quickly ran to the scene and then the doctors came.”

The reporter added that Erdogan was taken to another part of the mosque on a stretcher before returning to speak to the press.

“I have a small condition about my blood pressure, related to my diabetes,” Erdogan later said.

Political leaders in Turkey including Kemal Kilicdaroglu (CHP) and former President Abdullah Gul were quick to wish Erdogan good health.

Hurriyet reported in 2006 that Erdogan has “latent diabetes” and suffers from extreme highs and lows in blood sugar levels.

Mayo Clinic researchers “don't fully understand why some people develop prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and others don't.”

It lists a number of risk factors including weight, inactivity family history, race, age. The condition is commonly treated with diet, exercise, and in some cases insulin or other medications.

“This may happen to anybody under this intense schedule. May God give him a quick recovery,” Hurriyet reported the former president Gul as saying.
