ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Dr. Anwar Sheikha, a prominent Kurdish oncologist, who is renowned and respected for treating cancer patients and teaching students for free, underwent a “successful” surgery after he was diagnosed with a “massive subdural bleed” by his doctor.

Dr. Yad Naqshbandi, Sheikha’s nephew, told Rudaw on Tuesday that his uncle felt out of energy during a class and then fell down. That led to the bleed, but he underwent an operation on Tuesday.

“The surgery was successful … Now he is in the recovery ward,” Naqshbandi said, adding that his uncle can return to work after a week.

Naqshbandi said that Sheikha has been working at Hiwa Hospital for free and teaching 108 doctors without charge.

The oncologist has refused to be treated abroad to prove that Kurdistan is not different from other places, and he wants to demonstrate that. He is referred to as “the father of cancer.”

Many well-wishers sent him messages of love and hope on his Facebook page this week.

The cancer specialist has advocated for improving cancer treatment in the Kurdistan Region to save costs, allowing patients remain with their families.

KRG Health Minister Dr. Rekawt Hama Rasheed spoke highly of his colleague’s volunteerism.

“He has reduced the burden on us because he has always been a solid scientific pillar,” Rasheed said. “In this regard, we have never faced problems due to his abundant energy.”

Sheikha, 64, has planned to open a hospital in order to provide specialized oncology care.
