Some 834 pilgrims landed at Erbil and Sulaimani airports on Saturday night – the first batch of more than 7,000 Kurds who took part in this year’s Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

Many returning from Saudi Arabia were met and embraced by their families at the arrival gates.

“Unfortunately, this year two Kurdish pilgrims passed away while on Hajj,” Ibrahim Barzinji, an official from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs, told Rudaw.

The remaining “7,128 are in good health and will all return to the Kurdistan Region,” Barzinji added.

Approximately 50,000 people from Iraq embarked on the pilgrimage this year.

Millions of Muslims around the world convened on Saudi Arabia for Hajj, a religious duty all Muslims are required to complete at least once in their lifetime if they are financially and physically able.

Pilgrims visit holy sites located across Saudi Arabia, including the Kaaba in Mecca – the holiest site in Islam.
