ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Hours after Parliament voted in favor of authorizing air strikes against the Islamic State in Syria, British warplanes launched attacks on jihadist targets in the war-torn country.

Four Royal Air Force Tornadoes departed from Cyprus to Syria hours after the vote, according to AP reports.

The AP reported that a Ministry of Defense spokesperson confirmed the airstrikes and further details would be released Thursday.

Prime Minister David Cameron won the vote 397-223, but not without dissent from the Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn.

"Whether it's the lack of a strategy worth the name, the absence of credible ground troops, the missing diplomatic plan for a Syrian settlement, the failure to address the impact on the terrorist threat or the refugee crisis and civilian casualties,” Corbyn said during the debate leading up to the vote. "It's become increasingly clear that the prime minister's proposals for military action simply do not stack up."

President Obama praised the British Parliament’s vote to join the coalition air campaign to degrade and defeat ISIS in Syria. The Royal Air Force is already operating in Iraq.
