TORONTO, Canada — The Canadian government is trying to ban niqabs during citizenship ceremonies, and is taking this challenge all the way to the Canadian supreme court.

The government feels strongly it is inappropriate for new Canadians to wear the niqab while taking the oath to become a Canadian citizen. This week the country’s federal court of appeal ruled the government’s request unlawful. However, the Muslim face covering is a controversial topic across the country.

In the above video, Chris Kayaniotes speaks to a women’s rights activist and member of the Muslim Canadian Congress to understand why the government is fighting so hard to ban the niqab.
