ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Estonian President Alar Karis met in Munich on Friday to discuss the latest developments in the region and bilateral relations.

“We discussed mostly the situation in the Middle East, in Syria, and surrounding countries, and also mutual collaboration in future,” Karis told Rudaw after their meeting on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

“President Barzani expressed his appreciation for Estonia's support within the framework of the international coalition to fight terrorism, and praised the opportunities for cooperation in the field of technology and higher education between the two countries,” the Kurdish presidency said in a statement.

Karis invited President Barzani to visit Estonia.

“It’s always a pleasure to meet President @AlarKaris of Estonia. We exchanged views on areas of potential cooperation and regional security developments,” Barzani said on X.

Karis visited Erbil in January last year.

Estonia has been a member of the US-led global coalition against the Islamic State (ISIS) since 2016. It deployed a 110-strong unit to Erbil in April 2023 to support efforts ranging from base defense to rapid response, and providing security for advisors during activities outside the Erbil air base.
