French President Emmanuel Macron. Photo: AFP
French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday urged his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian to return to the negotiating table after a sixth round of nuclear talks was canceled.

“Iran’s nuclear program is a serious concern and must be resolved through negotiation. I therefore invited President Pezeshkian to return swiftly to the negotiating table to reach an agreement - the only viable path to de-escalation,” Macron said on X.

“We stand ready to contribute and to mobilize all our efforts to achieve that goal,” Macron said.

Earlier in the day, Iran had indicated it would not join the talks, scheduled for Sunday, and Oman’s foreign minister later announced that the talks were canceled. Tehran called the talks “meaningless” in light of Israel’s strikes.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, in a post on X, criticized Macron’s focus on Iran’s nuclear program while Israel “targets peaceful nuclear facilities, bombs homes and kills Iranians in cold blood.”

“The hypocrisy is staggering,” he added.

Baghdad has asked Iran to refrain from hitting United States interests on Iraqi soil after Tehran warned it will hit American bases in the region if it supports Israel, according to AFP.

Iraq made the request to its strategic ally, Iran, and received a positive response, AFP reported, citing an unnamed senior Iraqi official.

The Iraqi government is under pressure domestically to keep the country out of the conflict.

Iran has previously targeted US forces at Ain al-Asad airbase in Anbar province. In addition, pro-Iran Iraqi militia groups have targeted US interests in the country during times of heightened tensions between Iran and Israel.

Tehran accuses Washington of supporting Israel and has officially informed the United States, United Kingdom and France that it will target their military bases in the Middle East if they help Israel in its conflict with Iran, the semi-official media outlet Mehr News reported on Saturday.

The US mission in Iraq against the Islamic State (ISIS) will come to an end in September.

Washington earlier this week partially evacuated its diplomatic staff in Iraq.

Iran says focus is on conflict with Israel, not talks with US

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei. Photo: File/IRNA

Iran's Foreign Ministry on Saturday said Tehran is focused on its conflict with Israel and that talks with Israeli-ally the United States would be “meaningless” at this time, throwing doubt on the continuation of nuclear negotiations.

“The enemies of diplomacy and peace have imposed an unjust war on the Iranian nation, and America, despite all its claims about dialogue and diplomacy, has collaborated with the Zionist regime's aggression, including in targeting Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei told reporters, according to state media.

“It is obvious that under such circumstances, and as long as the Zionist regime's aggressions against the Iranian nation are not stopped, participation in dialogue with a party that is the biggest supporter and accomplice of the aggressor would essentially be meaningless,” he added.

Baghaei said earlier on Saturday that Iran has not yet made a decision about joining the next round of nuclear talks with the US, scheduled for Sunday in Muscat, Oman.

"The Iranian dictator is turning the citizens of Iran into hostages and bringing about a reality in which they - especially the residents of Tehran - will pay a heavy price because of the criminal harm to Israeli civilians," Katz said in a statement, AFP reported.

He added that if Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei “continues to fire missiles toward the Israeli home front - Tehran will burn."

The Israeli army said early on Saturday that it “intercepted two unmanned aerial vehicles that were launched into the country.”

Iranian media has also reported more Israeli attacks in the west and northwest of Iran.

Iran threatens to target US, UK, France bases: Iranian media

Iran has officially informed the United States, United Kingdom and France that it will target their military bases in the Middle East if they help Israel in its conflict with Iran, the semi-official media outlet Mehr News reported.

“Any country that participates in repelling Iran's attacks on Israel will be subject to targeting of all regional bases of the collaborating government, including military bases in Persian Gulf countries and ships and naval vessels in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea by Iranian forces,” Mehr News reported without citing any officials.

It added that Tehran has officially informed the US, UK and France of this.

The US has denied any role in Israel’s attacks on Iran, but it did help Israel shoot down incoming Iranian missiles, Associated Press reported citing American officials.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday said France would not participate in any attack on Iran but would defend Israel.

The British government said the UK did not provide Israel with military support in its attack on Iran, nor did it help Israel counter Iran’s retaliatory attack.

Iran says nuclear talks with US now ‘meaningless’

Esmaeil Baghaei Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson. Photo: IRNA

Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday said it has not yet made a decision about joining the next round of nuclear talks with the United States, stating dialogue is now “meaningless” and accused Washington of being complicit in Israel’s attacks targeting Iranian nuclear sites.

“The other party did something that essentially made negotiation and dialogue meaningless. It is not possible for you to simultaneously claim negotiation and dialogue to reach understanding on a topic while at the same time having a division of labor and allowing a racist regime to violate the territorial integrity of a country,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, IRNA reported.

He added that Israel could not have targeted Iran “without cooperation, coordination, or at least the conscious green light from America.”

The sixth round of talks between the US and Iran is scheduled for Sunday in Muscat, however, it is now unclear whether the meeting will take place after Israel’s attacks.

"It is still not clear what decision we will make on Sunday in this regard,” Baghaei said.

Iran fires waves of missiles at Israel

-
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iran targeted Israel overnight and into early Saturday morning with salvos of missiles in retaliation for attacks on its nuclear facilities and top military brass.

The Israeli military reported multiple waves of attacks. At least two people were killed and dozens injured, according to Israeli media.

Rescuers in the Gush Dan area, on the Mediterranean coast, said 34 people had been wounded, including a woman who later died of her injuries, AFP reported.

Israel also continued its operation against Iran, targeting military sites, while countering Iranian missiles across the country overnight.

The “Air Force continues to attack targets to eliminate a threat in Iranian territory,” said the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF).

Iranian state television said Iranian forces shot down Israeli reconnaissance drones in the northwest of the country.

The military escalation began on Friday when Israel carried out an unprecedented attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities and senior military commanders. Several of Iran’s top military men were killed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation aimed to “roll back the Iranian threat to Israel’s very existence” and warned it could last for days.

The attack has drawn condemnation from regional countries, while many Western nations have voiced concern over the escalating tensions and the risk of a wider conflict.

After the back-and-forth strikes, United Nations chief Antonio Guterres called for the two nations to cease fire. "Enough escalation. Time to stop. Peace and diplomacy must prevail," he wrote on X early Saturday morning.
