ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday that the Syrian army must "immediately" halt attacks on Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), warning that his country and the European Union cannot support the current approach taken by the interim government in Damascus.
“A united and stable Syria can only be achieved through the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces within its institutions, and not through war against those who fought alongside us against Daesh,” said Macron in a statement on X, referring to the Islamic State (ISIS).
“The offensive by the Syrian authorities must stop immediately. France and Europe will not be able to support the continuation of such an approach,” he added.
The Syrian Arab Army and affiliated armed factions have intensified attacks on the SDF despite the Kurdish-led force’s decision to withdraw from areas the army had declared “closed military zones.”
The intense fighting was ongoing at the time of writing this article.
France has been actively involved in the efforts toward a peace solution for the Kurdish issue in Syria.
There are international efforts to end the latest round of fighting. The SDF accuses the army of violating the Friday truce brokered by the US and other international actors.
