ERBIL, Kurdistan – Iraq will conduct a country-wide survey of the youth next year to compile data on the large and growing young population.

The survey will look at youth between the ages of 10 and 30, Sirwan Mohammed, head of the KRG Planning Ministry's Data Board, told Rudaw.

"In the survey, the needs and ways of thinking among the young people will be considered," Mohammed said.

It will be done in coordination with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Nearly half of Iraq’s population is under the age of 21, according to UN figures, making it one of the youngest populations in the world.

The total population has increased more than five-fold in the last 60 years, going from just over 7 million in 1960 to 38.3 million in 2017, according to data from the World Bank.

Iraq last held a census in 1987.

UNFPA, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the KRG took a snapshot of the population of the Kurdistan Region with a demographic survey published earlier this year.
